if you wish to understand the sociaslist mindset fully then it would be sensible to read the Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell which explains a way in which the economy could potentially successfully function..

until youve read those two texts youre not really qualified to comment on the issue (although reallly it ought to be balanced by some capitalist literature...though thats easy enough to encounter)

personally i believe that health, education, utilities and the postal system ought to be socialised and public transport should be privatised but subsidised by the government to ensure coverage of all areas
No. Carl Marx was not an economist. He was an antisemitic racist with an agenda.

To really read Marx, you need to look at his history, and the climate in which he was writing.

He first paper was entitled "On the Jewish Question"; an antisemitic rant.

At the time Jews were stereotyped as rich money grubbing business owners.

Marx suggested in the paper that Jews will never be able to assimilate because greed is part of their religion.

This is the beginning of socialism. An antisemitic young writer bitching about what he perceived to be rich greedy jews.

Its not really surprising that he tried to come up with a system to strip the rich greedy jews of all of their assets.

Karl Marx was a jewish man!!
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Marx#Biography

The jewish question was about Judaism as well as christianity, zionism, etc. Read it in it's entirety here (it's not very long):

It was not his first paper.

Jesus man get your information straight before posting such nonsense.

i didnt say that marx was an economist, though to educate oneself regardless of qualifications is surely anyones prerogative? to toss out all thinking on the basis of his profession is ridiculous; by the same standards you cant comment on food as youre not a chef.

and the motivations behind the idea of socialism arent relevant to its application today. thats not the reason behind peoples approval of socialism. its the same case that the reasons behind darwins thinking dont diminish the theory of evolution.

ultimately, socialism is a political ideology which is able to comment on a broad range of political issues. whether one believes it or not is their own choice, but theres no reason to hate it

It is completely relevant to socialism today.

It is a philosophy founded out of hatred.

Every time is has been practiced, it has been practiced as it was originally laid out; as a philosophy of violent oppression.

To support the notion that the intents of an idea have no bearing on the practice of an idea is ludicrous.

And for anyone that is stupid enough to try and argue that "On the Jewish Question" was not an anti-semitic hate speech, here is a quote from the paper.

Let us not seek the secret of the Jew in his religion, but let us seek the secret of the religion in the real Jew. What is the profane basis of Judaism? Practical need, self-interest. What is the worldly cult of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly god? Money.

Very well: then in emancipating itself from huckstering and money, and thus from real and practical Judaism, our age would emancipate itself.

An organization of society which would abolish the preconditions and thus the very possibility of huckstering, would make the Jew impossible. His religious consciousness would evaporate like some insipid vapour in the real, life-giving air of society . . .

No... Karl Marx didn't come up with socialism as a means to rid the world of Jews... wait... yes he did.

Hitler and Nazism took many ideas out of the Marxist playbook too...

actually Hitler labeled Marxism as "Jewish" and hated it all the more for that reason.

Hitlers association with Marxism is more complex than that. He was a proponent of Marxism until it no longer supported what he wanted to do with Germany, then Marx became a dirty Jew.

Its mildly ironic that Hitler and Marx both formed their anti-semitic beliefs due mainly to resentment of their own Jewish ancestry.

Marx for example was extremely resentful and embarrassed that he was born to Jewish converts.

There is absolutely no evidence of any Jewish ancestry in Hitler.
