  • Kevin Keegan came 2nd and then won it twice in a row over the span of 3 years.

Wild to think Kevin Keegan was the greatest player on earth at one point and nobody gives that guy any real respect,

    Weird one.

Objectively speaking he’s the greatest English player of all time

    • Wasn't it just the European footballer of the year back then though?

Owen won it in 2001 too. Not many had him as the best in the world at the time.

        Hmm not sure, maybe?

Lampard and Beckham both close to winning it too.

        Two underrated players really.

Harry Kane could win it one day imo

They screwed with it a few years ago and made the ballon d'or the fifa world player of the year, when it was just the best european.

Idk, maybe i'm getting confused. It never used to get that much attention as it does today.
Ran by the french anyway so it was always a bit dodgy.

I always wondered why Keegan was never spoke of that much as a player.
It could be because his managerial career overshadowed it or the fact England were crap in the 70's.

Same with Lineker, people think of him more for crapping on the pitch these days than the goal machine he was.

Won't matter if 90% of the squad is assembled from the MLS.

Idk when the standard was set to quantity of games > quality but it needs to be changed because these bums aren't even mediocre. Playing 30 games in MLS is equal to 5 games in 2nd tier of Europe's top 5 leagues.

Well no one disputes that the European leagues are far superior, but what the US is trying to do is grow their league, nothing wrong with that imho. In fact it has started to show improvement. MLS teams came close to winning the Concacaf champions league, the quality of players being brought is superior to what was once coming. There were talks about MLS possibly joining the Libertadores cup, in a few seasons. All good for the league and the American player.

Also I disagree with the notion that the team has to have a large % of their players playing in Europe to be good. Jamaica has had a lot of players playing in the 2nd tier European leagues and they've not won anything.

A good old fashioned bumming shall indeed take place.

It can turn in to a debate but reality is, US isn't too far off from Jamaica and Jamaica is what? The size of New Jersey?

Improving the MLS is fine but the country's best players should be applying themselves in the big leagues. If you want international tournament results. Otherwise, we can keep losing to Honduras and sacking coaches left and right, because the players aren't good enough as they lack high quality football experience.
