Default Whats the shortest time boxing its taken someone to be the consensus #1 P4P guy

Was thinking about this randomly today & the first name that came to mind is Roy Jones.

He started boxing in 1979 (~10yrs). He had a 121-13 amateur record allegedly. And when he was 25yrs, an ex-160lb title holder, 26-0, 23KO's & the #3 P4P guy he beat James Toney, a current 168lb title holder, who was considered the #2 P4P guy & most people thereafter considered him #1 P4P.

So Roy was 25yrs old, with 161 bouts experience & had 15 years in the game when he was considered #1 P4P.

Who had a quicker rise to the #1 spot P4P, in time in boxing, bouts or age or who are some other guys who had short runs in overall boxing experience to the #1 spot P4P?

Ring had Iron Mike in there in 1989 when he was what 23? I think he started boxing when he was 13 or so in juvenile detention... gotta be him I woulda thought.

Vasyl kinda got there when he was maybe 29 or 30 and started boxing at 4 (though he had a gap to learn to dance between 9 and 13 at his dads insistence) - so 25 odd years between first lacing up and getting to P4P#1 in the pro ranks or 21 if you take out the time he was a dancer. Floyd is also kinda out of the running because he started so young (like Vasyl at 3 or 4 apparently) although he got to the #1 slot in 2005 at 28, a touch younger than Lomachenko.

Oh sh^t. I didn't even think of Tyson. I never remember him as a P4P guy let alone #1 P4P, but he was both.

23 years old. 10 yrs in the game. Think Tyson only had 50-60 amateur fights. & he had 30ish pro fights around that time. Wow. That might be a tough one to beat.

I didn't even realize he was #1 at that point. Wow, that pretty much blows everyone else away. Anyone I can think of at least.

Julio Cesar Chavez gots an impressive turnaround on his success.

He started boxing in 1978 at 16 years old. He allegedly had a 14-1 amateur record. Turned pro in 1980. Became the #1 P4P guy when he beat Meldrick Taylor at 27 years old with a 69-0 pro record.

27 years old. 11 years in the game. 84 bouts experience.

I agree with Koba on Loma. Loma was boxing damn near in diapers. Had just shy of 400 amateur fights. And didn't really hit the #1 spot til he was 29 or 30. He's had 20+ years in the game.
