Had great skills but other than his win over Donaire he didn't do much with his talent and just wasted it all away. He did himself no favors when he fought against poor opposition, fought in a boring style that made people not want to watch him, and was content with just waiting and calling out the top fighters instead of actually making those fights happen. Then the Lomachenko fight happens which was supposed to be his biggest fight and a chance to prove a point, but instead he not only gets schooled and gives a piss poor performance he utterly QUITS without taking any damage, ultimately ruining his reputation as this feared boxer.

I'd say Rigo was very overrated on this board for a couple years before he ran into Loma. People treated him as if he was the most skilled boxer in the world when in reality he was a one dimensional, one handed fighter who was great at doing what he does best but had no versatility in his game. He's already near his 40 and has yet to do anything worthwhile since Donaire.
Just because he got outclassed by Loma doesn't make him overrated. He was in the top 5 P4P for years and has only lost to the P4P#1 at the time with 11 title fight wins in a row. Definitely wasn't overrated.

    • Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was always seen as a joke by the majority. He never had good skills and never passed the eye test. Maybe his own countrymen rooted for him because they were being supportive, but I can’t call him overrated because you have to be highly rated in the first place.

Most overrated as much as it pains me to not say GGG, imo it’s actually Roman Gonzalez.

      • Most of the hypejobs don't last long enough to be remembered and then a new batch comes in.

They are generally fighters who can't win a title, or those who hold onto a title briefly, despite the hype behind them.

The most recent example is probably David Price, when you consider that ESPN had him as their prospect of the year in 2012. He flamed out very quickly. He's still been around, but it's dangerous putting him in the ring at this point.

That's the issue I have, though. He was considered one of the top rated P4P fighters for years because of his big win over Donaire, but who exactly did he fight afterwards that was worth a damn? The only fighter I can think of was Agbecko, who wasn't really rated that much to begin with after losing to Mares. The reason why he was being considered as a top fighter to many people back then was because they created this illusion that he was this nightmare fighter with incredible boxing skills who couldn't be touched, a boogeyman that struck fear to guys such as Frampton, Santa Cruz, and no one wanted to fight him. But just because fighters supposedly avoided him doesn't mean he deserves to still be rated highly as this top P4P fighter if he didn't fight anyone else noteworthy after Donaire.

People overrated Rigo to no end based on the Donaire win and his aura of being this feared fighter, but once he finally stepped up to fight a legit opponent he decides to give a shameful performance followed by a disgraceful quit job. Loma exposed Rigo as a one dimensional fighter who didn't have the heart to step it up when the going got tough for him.

You don't just rate a fighter highly based on one great win and in the end Rigo just couldn't cut the mustard.

aside from that... he avoided top competition, and still to this day does not have a signature or career-defining win

if overrated means, fell way short of what was promised... then Golovkin is your man
GGG was a good fighter but his fans and promo team told fans he was GOAT MW and dude was not even Best MW ever in his career...Canelo arguably beat him twice and I think Cotto wouldve beat him. Jacobs and Dervencheko both beat him and he ducked fights against Charlo, Andrade, BJS, Lara, and Andre Ward.

If your best clear win is David Lemieux and a never-was Welterweight AT MIDDLEWEIGHT...you've got an awful resume

When confronted with a certain level of resistance, however, Mike didn’t rise to the occasion. But you’ve gotta give him his due.
The pre-jail Tyson didn't have problems with "a certain level of resistance". He went 12 rounds several times, defeated a hard-rock Razor Ruddock twice and even managed to floor Buster Douglas while being thrashed in a fight for which he didn't even train.

The post-jail Tyson should not even be considered. Instead, that's the version everybody think of when saying that he was overrated. Three years in prison when you're a perfectly functional fighting machine definitely deteriorate the engine. Then came the drugs, Don King ripping him off, thousands of whòres accusing him of sexual harassment and so on.

My answer to the thread's question is Oscar De La Hoya. The establishment's hype/fighter's actual value ratio is 10/1 for me.

              • He wasn't the biggest hypejob but Anthony Peterson was suppose to be the future of the LW or JWW division then he suddenly vanished. Fortunately for the Peterson family, Lamont who had less hype around him, put together a pretty nice career but Anthony was suppose to be the more talented brother.

It's insane the cult following Margarito had. People say everyone ducked him, but its literally all smoke and mirrors.

Margarito decisioned Clottey because Clottey broke his hand in the 4th round of their fight then lost a decision to Paul Williams in his very next fight. Before and after that were essentially journeymen level fighters.

Margarito beats and stops Cotto in an unbelievable performance and hes invincible...in his VERY NEXT FIGHT he gets dominated and stopped by - supposedly - an old Shane Mosley....AND plaster found in his handwraps.

So Margs had this "peak" of 1 fight against Cotto where he was possibly using loaded gloves before getting shutdown.

NEVER understood why this guy was so hyped...because he took a beating to point of losing an eye? Why is that celebrated?

but, keep pretending that somehow does not count... if you need to
In a couple years GGG will be like Margarito where a few sour ickriders cry about everyone ducking and ATG yadda yadda, but reality is the fighter was just never that good...he never took challenges and always found reasons to avoid best opponents
