Who is the most overrated hype job you've seen since you've been watching boxing?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was always seen as a joke by the majority. He never had good skills and never passed the eye test. Maybe his own countrymen rooted for him because they were being supportive, but I can’t call him overrated because you have to be highly rated in the first place.
Most overrated as much as it pains me to not say GGG, imo it’s actually Roman Gonzalez.

Most of the hypejobs don't last long enough to be remembered and then a new batch comes in.
They are generally fighters who can't win a title, or those who hold onto a title briefly, despite the hype behind them.
The most recent example is probably David Price, when you consider that ESPN had him as their prospect of the year in 2012. He flamed out very quickly. He's still been around, but it's dangerous putting him in the ring at this point.

People overrated Rigo to no end based on the Donaire win and his aura of being this feared fighter, but once he finally stepped up to fight a legit opponent he decides to give a shameful performance followed by a disgraceful quit job. Loma exposed Rigo as a one dimensional fighter who didn't have the heart to step it up when the going got tough for him.
You don't just rate a fighter highly based on one great win and in the end Rigo just couldn't cut the mustard.Last edited by Flo_Raiden; 11-14-2019, 03:52 PM.

aside from that... he avoided top competition, and still to this day does not have a signature or career-defining win
if overrated means, fell way short of what was promised... then Golovkin is your man
If your best clear win is David Lemieux and a never-was Welterweight AT MIDDLEWEIGHT...you've got an awful resume

The crowd would be on fire. Very large, professional fighters would be visibly scared. We haven’t seen that since. Just some of the reasons why Tyson tends to be overrated. When confronted with a certain level of resistance, however, Mike didn’t rise to the occasion. But you’ve gotta give him his due.
The post-jail Tyson should not even be considered. Instead, that's the version everybody think of when saying that he was overrated. Three years in prison when you're a perfectly functional fighting machine definitely deteriorate the engine. Then came the drugs, Don King ripping him off, thousands of whòres accusing him of sexual harassment and so on.
My answer to the thread's question is Oscar De La Hoya. The establishment's hype/fighter's actual value ratio is 10/1 for me.Last edited by Tatabanya; 11-14-2019, 03:46 PM.

He wasn't the biggest hypejob but Anthony Peterson was suppose to be the future of the LW or JWW division then he suddenly vanished. Fortunately for the Peterson family, Lamont who had less hype around him, put together a pretty nice career but Anthony was suppose to be the more talented brother.

Margarito decisioned Clottey because Clottey broke his hand in the 4th round of their fight then lost a decision to Paul Williams in his very next fight. Before and after that were essentially journeymen level fighters.
Margarito beats and stops Cotto in an unbelievable performance and hes invincible...in his VERY NEXT FIGHT he gets dominated and stopped by - supposedly - an old Shane Mosley....AND plaster found in his handwraps.
So Margs had this "peak" of 1 fight against Cotto where he was possibly using loaded gloves before getting shutdown.
NEVER understood why this guy was so hyped...because he took a beating to point of losing an eye? Why is that celebrated?
