Why do some call Hispanic a race?

People from Spain hate it when they are called Hispanic and/or when some other Spanish speaking country are labeled Spanish

Most Europeans don't like it (or are amused by it) when Americans - both continents - call themselves Spanish/Italian/Polish?Irish/Etc.

I worked on cruise ships for many years & the Italians onboard had a lot of disdain for people who would say "Hey, I'm Italian too. I'm from Brooklyn" etc.

Same with the Paddies. People would go up to them & say "I'm 1/27th Irish. I hate English" but they couldn't even point to Ireland on a map.

As for the Hispanic being a race thing, I think it is. What IS a race?
