Victor Ortiz sees
'manufactured'
unbeaten record for
Floyd Mayweather and
has little respect
Victor Ortiz, the WBC welterweight
champion, is in a defiant mood ahead
of his defence against boxing
superstar Floyd Mayweather Jnr on
September 17 and believes his fellow
American has a record which has been manufactured in recent years. “He’s
good, but he’s not great,” said Ortiz. Billed as a potential ‘Fight of the Year’
contender, Mexican-American power
puncher Ortiz has no doubts that he
will be the first man to stop the flashy,
pound-for-pound king, ‘Money’
Mayweather. Ortiz dazzled in his last contest, beating
previously undefeated welterweight
world champion Andre Berto in a
thriller to claim his first world title.
‘Vicious’ Ortiz is certain he will dish out
similar treatment in just over two weeks’ time by turning many doubters
into believers under the Las Vegas
lights. “He can’t adjust to me,” Ortiz said. “I
don’t care what he brings. He’s done.
He was done when he signed to fight
Victor Ortiz. He’s overdue [a defeat],
he’s way overdue. He’s not supposed
to be here. He’s definitely not supposed to be a 147-pounder and
I’m going to see to it that he knows
that,” he added. “Floyd is a good fighter, but I’ve
always thought he wasn’t great. Ever
since I was a kid, you know, when
you’re a little boy, you sit back and
you say, ‘Wow, that guy’s good. That
guy’s great.’ Oscar [De La Hoya] was one of those for me. [Shane] Mosley
was definitely one of those for me.
Bernard Hopkins was one of those for
me. “In his prime, Zab Judah was one of
those for me, and Floyd, not in his
prime, not in his come-up, not in his
anything has ever been that way, so
I’m definitely not impressed for one,
and I’m not a person who’s going to hold any respect like those other 41
[who fought Mayweather before]- I’ll
show you everything on September
17,” said Ortiz. Raised in Garden City, Kansas without
any parents after his mother initially
abandoned the family at the age of
eight, before his father left four years
later, Ortiz relied on his boxing skills to
help provide a better life for him and his two siblings. Used to being written
off, the world champion, a 6-1
underdog, knows he will stun the
boxing world with victory over
Mayweather. “I’ve always been the underdog in
everything I’ve done in my life, just the
way I’ve grown up and even in
boxing. I was always told I won’t do
certain things or that I didn’t have the
potential to become something big, but I’ve done pretty well for myself so
when I went out looking for Floyd and
he finally accepted I was like ‘Wow,
alright!’,” he said. “Floyd who? That’s it! Everything will
be discovered and told September
17th when a man’s career ends, and a
new man’s begins. And let me clarify
for you, Victor Ortiz will begin his reign
on his throne and I’m going to bring a cane for a good friend; make sure his
back ain’t hurting too much or
something,” taunted Ortiz. The 24-year-old is certain that his
renowned knockout power will carry
through into this fight and is sure he
has the strategy to beat the illusive
Mayweather, in a fight which is set to
be the future Hall of Famer’s toughest to date. “The power will definitely carry in.
Here’s the thing, 41 of those fighters
that he’s fought, none of them were
me, so somebody’s in trouble,” said a
confident Ortiz. “He can’t adjust to everything. 41 of
his fighters he’s fought the same way
every fight, every single fight, except
analysts are too blind to see that he
actually fights the same way every
fight. Now, I don’t really care what he’s got to bring, you know, he’s
done. The moment they mentioned
Victor Ortiz vs. Mayweather, he was
done, period!,” he said.
