The rule for this bout was that the fighter scoring a knockdown had to go to the furthest corner. This is why the ref did not start the count until 4-5 seconds AFTER Tunney was on the canvas. Thus THE LONG COUNT.

The timekeeper started his count as soon as Tunney hit the canvas...as he should. However since Dempsey did not go to the furthest neutral corner he delayed starting the count. Once Dempsey started walking to the corner the ref DID NOT pick up the timekeepers count but instead started at “ONE”. The time lost was measured at 4.5 seconds via timing the film of the bout however the timekeeper stated he had it timed at 6 seconds. One thing never discussed is the film of the bout is not at normal speed... it appears to be slightly fast which is typical of silent era films. It may just be that the timekeepers count of 6 lost seconds is accurate. This would mean Tunney May have been down 15-16 seconds. If true Tunney looks up at the ref at a true count of NINE.
