Another shot at a world championship may or may not be in sight for Larry Holmes, but the famed heavyweight boxer from Easton credits radial keratotomy with helping him see better as he makes the attempt.

Holmes had the surgery last September to correct nearsightedness caused by an earlier surgery to repair a detached retina.

"I see a lot better now," he said last week. He added that the RK surgery performed by Dr. James F. Cochran of Easton "made the difference" in his Jan. 5 victory over Everett ("Big Foot") Martin in Mississippi.

"I wish that when I fought Evander Holyfield I would have seen as well. I would be heavyweight champion of the world," Holmes said.

Holmes was beaten by Holyfield last June after losing a contact lens when he suffered a blow to the jaw in the fight's third round.

He was wearing the contact because a band was placed around his right eye in the surgery to correct the detached retina. The band shortened the eyeball and made Holmes nearsighted, Cochran said.

"The focus was off. It affected my aggressiveness because I couldn't see," Holmes said.

Holmes fought and defeated Ray Mercer last Feb. 7 despite having the detached retina.

Although at the time Holmes denied the injury and later the operation to repair it, he said last week that he was injured last January while in training camp.

According to Dr. Christopher Rapuano, corneal services specialist at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, one possible complication of RK is reopening of the incisions in the eye if a patient later suffers a blow to the area. He said he wouldn't recommend RK to somebody who was "into karate or boxing."

But Holmes said he is not worried about reinjuring the eye. He said doctors told him to take three months off to heal, which he did. He now plans another fight in March.

"I fought (Everett) in Mississippi and I was able to see and focus well," he said, adding he had been having problems with depth perception before the surgery.

"I can see great now," Holmes said. "It's like having your same eye back."

It's not like that anymore. The owner purged most of the Pinoy mods.

No, they wouldn't, but PRK is a good option for boxers. I believe Jermall Charlo had this procedure done.

Definitely not but I think Joe Frazier wore them in one of his fights later on when he had vision problems and the results were not good. I think no one knew he was wearing them at the time. I don't think he lost the fight but I recall him saying it was not good. It was his last fight I think.
