I don't think too many people were keen on paying money when Floyd was retiring and taking a soft touch retirement fight. There was no more anticipation for anything in terms of future fights.

But why did mayweather/mcgregor do so much better?

Surely Berto had a much better chance at winning?

True and Floyd wasn't shy about the fact that he wanted to fight an easy opponent. He even told fans that if they didn't want to see it, then don't pay for it.

They were surprisingly strong considering what guys have been pulling since. There's no one in boxing right now that could pull those numbers against a Berto level opponent. That fight was a joke. Yet, the numbers were strong by today's standards.

Novelty value. McGregor and Mayweather being the 2 biggest names in combat sports, given the ability of attracting a casual fanbase etc. etc. etc.

Media hype is everything, as is crossover appeal. McGregor v Floyd had incredible amounts of both of those things. Floyd v Berto had none.

It was more about the event than the fight itself. The press conferences alone was filling arenas bigger than 99.9% of fighters can fill.

And if we want to be brutally honest, purse aside, McGregor was arguably the A-Side and the attraction. The support he had was incredible. The clueless general public thought he could actually win.

Because Berto was not a top 15 welterweight and had no chance to win. Mayweather should have fought somebody better than Berto.

Berto was a shot B rate fighter when they fought. It was a mismatch. Berto was also never a PPV draw and fans had a bad tast in their mouth after Floyd/PAC.

It was actually a pretty good fight from what I remember. I didn’t order it but I watched it like 4 months later.

Well sure, but this is Floyd. And this is Floyd's 3rd lowest PPV ever & the 2 that beat it were the first two PPV's he did.

So it definitely did terrible numbers for Floyd.
