i heard that too, but know they are saying that the pilot discharged the fuel so it didn't start a fire. nothing is certain right now.

This makes more sense because you want to have as little gas in the tanks if you're going to crash.

I don't believe a plane carrying that many people would leave without having enough fuel. Maybe they had mechanical problems in the air?
