  • Kovalev Vs Ward purses. Is this for real?

I just found this article on the Kovalev/Ward fight at Total Sportek and I'm having difficulty believing the info it contains.

According to this Ward is on a $5million guarantee, plus sponsorship and PPV cut, and Krusher has been guaranteed $7million, plus an undisclosed fee from HBO.

It also says here that HBO are expecting 900k to 1million PPV buys for the fight.

The Ward guarantee should be true but last I checked Kovalev was getting less than Ward so this is a bit confusing.

Those are higher than I expected, but are still doable. Pac/Bradley 3 lost a bit of money on ~400k PPV buys, and those purses were $26M total.

If the fight does 300k buys @ 70 = $21m, half to HBO = 10.5m, plus $5m gate = $16m revenue, after undisclosed fees, expenses etc, that's gonna be breakeven point.

There's the undercard purses too, don't forget, plus the undisclosed fee from HBO for Kovalev.

This PPV stuff is confusing. GGG/Lemieux just about broke even, with 150k PPV buys and a combined purse of $4million for the main event. So ...

Wow, people gonna be taking a big loss on this fight if that's true. This is a great fight but it's not doing more than like 300,000 probably.

Yeah 1 mil seems pretty damn optimistic.

Didn't Canelo/Cotto do shy of 1 mil? And Canelo & Cotto each are waaaayyyy bigger names than either Kovalev or Ward.

I actually think it can get up around the 600K range

It would be great for the sport if this fight did as well as that. But based on other HBO PPV numbers we've been seeing since Floyd/Manny, I can't see it doing even half that much.

I dunno about Ward having a 5 million dollar guarantee but I wouldn't be surprised considering he got almost 2 million against that scrub he fought a couple years ago.

The Kovalev purse is even more...unbelievable. I doubt a guy goes from earning less than hlaf t hat much to all of a sudden getting 7 million.

Either way, I dont give a ****. I'm just hoping the fight lived up to expected hype.
