Total Government spending on Medicare in 2007: 440 billion. Already about 5% of GDP, expected to skyrocket in coming years:

Total Government spending on Medicaid in 2004: 295 billion. State's spend an average of 16.8% of state general funds on the project.

I don't have more recent figures on hand, but it's safe to say that more than 750 billion a year is spent on these two government health care plans alone.
We could spend about 80 million a year to insure the 12 million people that actually want coverage. And we could address a lot of things like Tort reform, allowing companies to purchase health insurance across state lines, and some other things that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal mentions here:

But what we DON'T need, what we'll never need, is this "public option" garbage.
