Duran was never the same. But obviously had success. No doubt being clean koed, unconscious like that, definitely takes a piece out of you. No doubt about it. Especially at that age. It's not as bad if you are in your early or mid twenties, but the older one is, the more it takes out of you.
BUT, the thing is, even a PAC that is operating below 10%, or whatever that KO took out of him, he is still going to kill Rios.
For christ's sake Rios is just a sacrificial lamb. The Floyd fight will never happen. So Pac doesn't need to be as close to prime as possible. He can just beat 4-5 more dudes, and call it a day.

pacqauio himself was stopped nearly cold twice early in his career, in exactly the manner in which hearns stopped duran.
if you've ever actaully seen the fight, you'd know that duran was only "unconscious" briefly. he stood up with a bit of help, and was trying to get up almost immediately after the punch hearns landed.
duran looked not just good, but great against barkley. he wasn't the guy he was at 135 when he was even at 147. guys deteriorate. duran was able to use his craft as his physical abilities deteriorated. his reflexes were still terrific at that stage, and he could still roll punches and come back with his own against much larger men.
pacqauio could come back. i don't think he will, but it's not fair to say that nbody has come back from being stopped.
now, when guys start getting stopped for many fights in a row, it usually signals the end.
the fights that take the most out of a fighter are extended beatings that end in a knockout. if a guy gets his ass kicked for 10 rounds before getting stopped cold his brain takes a hellish beating.
a good recent example was ortiz - maidana. ortiz doesn't remember anything from that fight. he was out on his feet from the first big right hand maidana landed, the one that shook him so visibly when he got back up. ortiz has been a completely different person since that fight. his motivation is gone, and even his personality has changed. that's head trauma.
