  • Record eight medals for GB boxers at European championships

EIGHT boxers from Great Britain are guaranteed a medal at the EUBC European Boxing Championships after record-breaking day by the GB Boxing team in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Galal Yafai, Peter McGrail, Luke McCormack and Cheavon Clarke made it a fantastic afternoon session for the British team as only Lee McGregor failed to get through from the GB Boxing squad.

The achievement was matched in the evening session as Niall Farrell, Pat McCormack, Calum French and Frazer Clarke joined them in the semis, with Tom Whittaker-Hart being the only one to miss out.

It was an astonishing performance by the boxers’ as every member of the team, apart from Pat McCormack and Galal Yafai, is making their debut in a major international tournament.

The eight medal haul is the best ever achieved by boxers from Great Britain in the 90 year history of the European Championships and exceeds the six medals won by boxers from the GB Boxing squad at the 2015 event in Samakov, Bulgaria.

All of today’s winners go into Friday’s semi-finals where they have a chance to upgrade their guaranteed to bronze medal to silver with the possibility of winning gold in Saturday’s final.

GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken said: “This is the first time that most of this team have competed at a major championship, so to come to such a tough tournament, win eight medals and qualify 10 boxers for the world championships is a superb achievement by the boxers, the coaches and all of the support staff that help to prepare the team.

“This young team are developing well considering the Tokyo Olympics are just over 3 years away.

“The boxers’ have done fantastically well to reach the semi-finals and win at the very least a bronze medal. The challenge for the boxers and the team is to try and turn those medals into a silver or a gold.

“It has been a tremendous showing out here and bodes well for the future.”

The results of today’s bouts are below:

It doesn't seem that I can delete my thread but I'll paste my comment in here and it can be the "official" one

Semi-finals tomorrow at 12:30 and 16:00 BST on the BBC Red Button in the UK. A new record of eight English boxers have made it to the semis

      Tomorrow's schedule

Yafai vs Carmona, Luke McCormack vs Petrauskas and Farrell vs Irvine stand out to me as particularly good/difficult fights for the English boys, plus Pat McCormack and French have Ukrainian opponents

I haven't managed to watch any of it so far but it seems that Pat McCormack and Cheavan Clarke have stood out in particular, with Cheavan actually KOing Azerbaijan's Abdullayev in one round in the quarters. It also seems that Azerbaijan's Rio silver medalist Sotomayor got beaten pretty badly by a Pole named Polski and their great super heavy, Majidov, was eliminated by a Frenchman named Aboudou-Moindze, so it's been a bad tournament for them

I'm thinking Mo Ali should turn pro now as both Farrell and Cawley seem to have better prospects than him for Tokyo 2020. The two of them are very impressive and it's almost a shame they compete in the same division, although at least it means they'll get great sparring. It also seems that Team GB will struggle to replace Buatsi at light heavy. Whittaker isn't a world class middleweight either but I think he'll be usurped by the Scot Willy Hutchison by 2020. In fact I was a bit surprised not to see Hutchison competing for Scotland in this tournament as I think he's 19 now

Excellent stuff. Haven't seen a single second of the boxing yet as i havent had time to skip through the 6 hour fight dumps Aiba are putting on YT. Would it kill for some time stamps ffs

Boxing really is buzzing in this country from top to bottom.

Crazy they've all made the World Championships serves as a consolation prize for Lee McGregor.
Team GB have a great set up as it stands, seems they're just churning these boys(&girls). The medal haul over the past few years in all comps has been ridiculous to be honest.
Let's see if they can bring home the Gold!.

            Mo Alis still a Am?.

Close round one. Yafai puts Carmona on the backfoot and lands the bigger shots in the first half, but Carmona lands some counters in the second half

Yafai manages to trap Carmona on the ropes for much of round two and finds a home for some good bodywork and straight lefts. Carmona has his moments, especially with uppercuts, but definite Yafai round for me

Carmona's footwork a little more effective in round three despite appearing tired and Yafai doesn't land much of note

Yafai gets the split decision. Probably deserved since he won a clear round and Carmona didn't

Beautiful feet from the Scouse Sweet Pea in round one. Really enjoy watching McGrail. It's not a style you see that much in British boxing. He occasionally overdoes it and gets tagged unnecessarily, but when he's on his game he's really slick

Pretty much schooled the Spaniard apart from one or two lapses in concentration. He's a handful for anyone unless they're significantly quicker than him like Ramirez and Stevenson

                  Two guaranteed silvers for England

Bit of a hometown decision for Butsenko over the rangy Irishman. He was getting through occasionally but I thought Walker won the first two rounds

Luke McCormack vs Petrauskas now. Good round one for Luke, he's a classy boxer like his brother

Petrauskas manages to get inside McCormack's reach in round two and probably does enough to win it even though Luke regains control towards the end

Close round three but I think Petrauskas landed the more significant shots. McCormack really needed his jab to be more consistent

McCormack gets the decision but I honestly slightly favoured the Lithuanian
