Post New to Boxing - 2.5 weeks until first fight

Hi there. I volunteered to box in an amateur boxing event that is a promotional event for a local sports radio station in Dallas. I found out a week ago that I was selected, and the fight is on Thursday, August 29. So, not a lot of time to get ready. I have never boxed before, never done MMA, never even been in a bar fight or the like. I reached out to a local gym and have begun training there with a good trainer.

I am 33 years old, 61, 180lbs. My opponent is apparently 30 years old, 62, 185, and he allegedly also has no experience or formal training. The fight is sanctioned by USA Boxing, so there will be a weigh-in, physical, real ref, etc.

I guess I am looking for advice from you guys as to what you would recommend in terms of training, strategy, whatever.

I am new to the forum, so I can't post links, but you can see the fights from a couple years ago on YouTube. Just search this:

The Ticket's Corona Light Fight Night 2017 (8 Fights)

Thank you in advance for any advice, training recommendations, strategy, or general thoughts you guys/gals might have.

- Jack

My advice from a few boxing sparring sessions with a friend who had MMA experience: Be prepared to be gassed within a few minutes. Don’t try any fancy counters. Stick with a jab and right hand. Keep your eyes on the target. Moving out of distance is real simple way to avoid getting hit. Be prepared to get hit. The best counter i managed pull off, I hurt my buddy in our first session by ducking under his punch and throwing a straight right the body. I knocked the wind out of him and had him moving backwards. Anyway i had a lot of fun. Sounds like you will too.

Thanks mxtali. Yeah, I'm a pretty athletic dude, but my cardio is definitely not great. I feel like learning as much of the basics as possible over the next couple weeks and getting my cardio up will give me the best odds. We'll be wearing headgear and using 16oz gloves, so I'm guessing my dreams of getting a headshot KO are not great. Maybe a solid body shot will do the job though.

Over the next 2.5 weeks, try run nearly everyday. do 2-3 miles as fast as you can, with a few bursts of speed mixed in along the way. Do some boxing everyday also, and try spar a few times too. As for for technique/tactics: keep your hands up, chin down, and throw straight punches.

2 days before the right REST. Come in feeling sharp and rested.

What does that mean exactly? You mean like a baseball player? Or Tom Brady and Dan Marino who are great passers but trip over their own feet?

Get as much sparring in as you can till 4-5 days before. Hands up chin down and just concentrate on firing straight punches. 1-2-1 keep it simple stay busy.
The nerves will pass the moment the bell rings. In two and a half weeks you won’t be able to really improve cardio so don’t try running
Some crazy distances.
