From my point of view, you answered your own question.

I think the Left is trying to guilt trip or ban guns all together. However, if they succeed, it could pose a multitude of issues across the board and plunge this country into a miserable state. If "democratic socialism" prevails and the populace has no manner in which to defend itself against a dictatorship due to them formerly giving up their rights to defend themselves, no resistance will be at hand. Easy conquest. That's at one extreme side of the spectrum.

On the other hand, the Right is pushing it in order to make more profit. Vile capitalism that leeches off the common folk's fear and now you have a paranoid populace ready to snuff each other off the face of the earth with a click. Rinse and repeat and more money is vacuumed in. Again, this is on the other extreme side of the spectrum.

Truth be told this issue is so deep rooted it would take some seriously dedicated minds to begin to unpack, untangle and finally piece together a proper solution.
