the timing of BREXIT and US 2016 election played a role in this. trump doesn't hide the fact that he is Mr. America, he is seen as a nationalist, therefore globalist institutions like the EU and the US deep state see him as a threat to their status quo. this is where the propaganda wing comes in...the fake news, the brainwashing by "legitimate" media. now you have swathes of morons in the UK angered over things they know very little of, and the narrative for these people quite stupidly becomes leave = nationalism = trump = bad vs remain = globalism = EU = good.
