Military budget of the USA is about 16% of the GDP. Wealth fare, Healthcare, and Housing is over 60% of our GDP. This is about as helpful as some of the other comments. Comparing immigration to 150+ years ago to today is comparing apples and oranges. Back then we weren't paying for healthcare, education, and just didn't have the large welfare state we do now. Immigrants back then had to pull up there boot straps and get to work or serve in the military. Its just a different ballgame now.

In an ideal world with a minimal welfare state my policy on immigration would be, I just want to know you are here. But we don't exist in an ideal world.
