Mayweather vs De La Hoya - what was the hype like?

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will be the biggest fight I've ever seen live and that's saying something.


Bigger than Trinidad-Delahoya or any of Oscar's fights, Whitaker-Chavez, Lewis-Holyfield 1 and any of Tyson's PPV fights. All big fights but this one( Mayweather-Pacquiao) is almost surreal with the anticipation.


The purse for both is just unbelievable. I would be shocked if it doesn't surpass 3 million buys.

For what reason exactly? Pac has never stood a chance, anyone who understands how styles make fights knows this. He is a big name, and big draw, but it's a casuals matchup, even undeserving past opponents like Ghost have a better chance against Floyd stylistically. Will it generate money? Sure, but let's not pretend like this is a legitamate challenge for Floyd, you could throw a stone into a crowd on any street and hit a more viable opponent as far as genuine threats go. Floyd will eat him alive, the people that get excited for this fight are the same people that don't understand boxing at a high level, or it would be plain as day that Floyd is a stylistic nightmare for a fighter like Pac: Limited, one dimensional, easily gets drawn into exchanges, and low ring IQ.

This. The hype was unreal. The last mega fight without question. DLH was a natural draw and still the face of boxing and cash cow at the time, and he was past his prime at that point. Casuals everywhere were talking about that fight. it was unreal. I think it was the biggest fight since DLH/Trinidad easily, the Pac/Floyd fight may generate more money but it won't come close as far as genuine hype, the hype for DLH/Mayweather was unforced, you didn't have to sell that fight to fans, it sold itself.

Your perception of these two fights seems warped. Floyd-DLH was heavily hyped. The HBO 24/7 format was created for that fight. Fans who followed the sport closely (correctly) predicted the fight would be boring. The anticipation and the PPV buys will blow that away. No matter how this fight turns out, the style matchup almost guarantees that it will be a much better fight for the fans than the DLH fight.

Yeah, I didn't even want to get started on that. Calling Pacquiao one dimensional and saying he has a low boxing IQ is a Paulie Malignaggi level insult.

How would it be anything but easy? Pac absolutely is one dimensional, all he does is come forward and throw combinations consisting of a low punch repertoire. His defense is lackluster, he doesn't have high ring IQ, and he doesn't know what to do when you take away what works for him or counter him, both things Floyd excels at. Pac is exciting to watch because he is a volume puncher, is aggressive, has fast hands, power, and loves to fight. Floyd literally eats fighters like that alive. Floyd will figure him out early, time him, counter him, and have a field day. Where other fighters would try to adjust back, or use a different approach, Pac is just stubborn and keeps pressing, he will be frustrated, and lost in the ring. The only reason he was competitive with JMM was because JMM isn't nearly as fast as Floyd and is not as good defensively, or none of those fights would have been close.

I don't think Floyd is a good matchup for Manny, either.

Although you can bet Manny will be in better shape for this fight than any of his recent encounters.

Yes, he is defensively suspect. But he does hit from some pretty unorthodox angles. And he hits hard. And he accrues points.

My biggest question is whether Floyd might have left this fight 18 months too late into his career. If Manny turns it into a points-shootout does Floyd still have the stamina to fight hard and long? I'm not sure.
