There is no heavyweight in history not named Muhammad or Cassius who could beat a prime Joe Louis.

Louis' chin was fine, and even if it were better, I'd still bet on Clay/Ali to beat him, but that's it.

In other words, his chin doesn't affect his ranking H2H for me at all. He and Ali are a tier all to themselves.

He could beat Ali. Ore Liston or post exile but if not he gets the brakes beat of him.

Ali could be caught with left hooks and right hands and louis has the power to hurt him in those time frames also Louis was a great finisher so if he hurt him I believe he could get him outta there being that Ali had lost his legs or wasn't exactly in his prime yet.

He could beat tyson also if he made it outta the first four rounds and could land some power shots you can't slug with louis no matter how shaky his chin is.

Forman IMO would be his toughest fight that long jab and brutal uppercut would cause a lot of trouble for the smaller Louis who tended to crouch over but then again now that I think about it Tyson had a vicious uppercut to so Idek

        This is a joke right?
If you gave Louis a good chin, he would have two then!

Imagine the intimidation factor of a guy with two chins?

Now combine that with the stone cold gaze of Louis.

          Not a joke at all!

            Agreed.

People point to the first Schmeling fight, but that was a technical flaw of Louis' that allowed Maxie to keep nailing him with the right hand. He soon corrected that flaw, and was never knocked out or stopped again until Marciano.

Louis had a very good chin. Schmeling, one of the hardest punchers of the late 20’s to late 30’s hit Louis with dozens of blistering right hands before finally stopping him. There is no bout he could “take it” otherwise this bout would have ended well before round 12. Louis chin was probably not as good as Jeffries, Dempsey or Ali but certainly the tier right below.

He did not have a very good chin. It was below average and what kept him up or getting up was will-power and great conditioning, as well as an inferior opponent being unable to finish him. Nobody with a "very good chin" had any business being dropped and hurt by those opponents. The amount of times he hit the deck was bad enough but it's worse if you look at how often he got bambi legs(imo the true mark of a weak chin) if it had been anyone not named Louis with that kind of CV, they would be heavily criticized and vilified for it.
