Are you saying that because they're worth 5 billion that its ok for them to lose a few million for absolute no good reason?

Roc Nation is a hobby company owned by a rich man who doesn't care if he loses a few million.

But eventually he will get tired of Ward losing his money.

If Ward beats Sergey Kovalev in style, Roc Nation would have a 32 year old, three-belt champion (one fight away from 175lb kingpin), American fighter that they could take to Barclays Center in NYC or Oracle in Oakland, whom the sportsbooks at MGM Resorts can relish in covering for certain fights, while also being a guy without the ridiculous wear/tear.

Andre Ward should reasonably have another 7-10 fights in him before the notion of decline starts to set in (after which more careful matchmaking could prolong things).

Having 10 fights from the 175lb and p4p kingpin should be worth a small fortune.

probably...this fight isnt big enough nationally to warrant PPV but maybe roc nation is hoping a ward win will help in future endeavors as far as making SOG more of a crossover star...

The thing that all you guys don't get for some reason is that most promoters lose money on fighters in the beginning of their career, and in certain fights even if/when they get to the top. Boxing promotion/management is a gamble, and a lot of it will be taking calculated risks, sometimes taking a short term hit for a long term gain, that is typical for any business.

Its always a risk - they are backing their investment (Ward) and probably taking a long term view on Ward and the company as a whole. If he wins this fight, I am sure he will be in a fight in the future where he makes Roc Nation a boat load of money, and by the way there is no guarantee that this show is going to lose money, lets see the numbers first before everyone starts to jump the gun.

Also for them Ward is just the beginning, for Roc Nation getting Ward was a massive coup, and now they have a chance to show their capabilities as promoters and the opportunity to put on a good promotion on the big stage, depending on how they do, I'm sure will determine if they attract more big name fighters and prospects in the future.

I think they will lose money on Ward on this fight, but lose money overall? That is too difficult to answer - if he wins tomorrow, I would say no. If he loses? Possibly yes. I like the fact that they have backed him though - they are taking a risk just like he is, but he is making retirement fund type of money, which is the way it should be and what his talent warrants.
