  • Deviated Septum and nasal breathing issues?

I took a couple good shots to the nose saturday sparring.

It's been sore the past few days and it has become increasingly apparent that breathing from my left nostril is pretty strained/difficult. I feel like my right nostril is a bit bigger now on the inside and is making up for the other nostrils lack of airflow, and I didn't notice any negative affects during the rest of the rounds I sparred or during training the past couple of days since.

Anyone had a similar issue, have any advice, or have had it affect your breathing/fighting?

Sounds like surgery would be an option, but that it weakens the structural integrity of the nose (and would probably be something I'd do when I'm done with fighting?).

No real cosmetic damage from what I can tell at this point.

I had my nose badly busted up from too many jabs over the years in sparring sessions and I did need surgery to straighten it out.

I would go a doctor and have him take a look. Could be something as simple as the doctor straightening something out or it could take a few days to heal more.

Sounds smart and reasonable lol. Like most ppl I try to avoid going to the doctor, going to see if I can get an appt that isn't 2-3 weeks from now.

If you have insurance or don't have to pay a small fortune I would get it checked out.

Swelling happens esp. after bleeding and heals in a week. At any case you should see a doctor if even after 2 days you have breathing problems. Probably it's just dried up blood bcz you have some small scar inside.

I think you were actually right. The septum definitely seems deviated, but when pushing tissues up into my nose there would always be some dried blood on the end of it.

I haven't boxed since that happened (some family stuff came up this week that I needed to deal with and I ordered a new pair of gloves), but I have run 45 minutes+ and seems to be fine. I'll be back at training and sparring tomorrow.

I do have good insurance with no deductible, but getting an appt would be minimum 2-3 weeks out and doesn't seem like any sort of emergency.

I had surgery 2 years ago. I had problems with my sinuses since I was a kid. Got hit in the face with a baseball bat (unintentional) during a game at school. Ended up with a deviated septum. Used to get really nasty sinus headaches. I still get them but they're nothing compared to what they were pre surgery. I think your right it will weaken your nose. Mine feels not as firm as it used to be. Go see an ear nose throat specialist.

Sparring today the nose held up well. Got hit with a well timed uppercut after throwing a combination and started bleeding, but didn't hurt and wasn't an issue. Wiped it off and kept going. We'll see how the pain is tomorrow. Coach also said that I prob had some dried blood in there that was making breathing more difficult.

Yeah everything worked out man. A little worried that my nose may be a little more prone to bleeding, but wasn't bleeding terribly and has helped me pick up on something I need to improve.

I do a good job at attacking from angles and with head movement, etc but after throwing a 3-6 punch combo I end up back in the pocket and once I stop throwing have a tendency to get caught with something wide or from below (prob not able to see them as well with the headgear and something I most likely have picked up from padwork/heavy bag work). So working on making sure I either continue my movement out to a side or get back out once I finish those longer combos.
