He's always been a counter puncher, and you can be both a counter puncher and a boxer puncher, counterpuncher is just kind of a substyle. For example Bernard Hopkins and James Toney were both. Canelo has all the tools that great counterpunchers typically have, (good upper body and head movement, accurate punching and punch/selection and good hand speed and reflexes.
