  • Pacquiao forms party for local polls

MANILA, Philippines--Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has formed a local political party and has asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to accredit it.

Comelec commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer revealed on Monday that Pacquiao filed a petition last December asking the poll body to accredit his party called People's Champ Movement.

Ferrer said the Comelec recently heard the petition, which has been up for a ruling. The political party could only field candidates for local posts in General Santos and Sarangani Province, the Comelec said.

Pacquiao has indicated plans to run for a congressional seat in Sarangani province in the 2010 polls.

He lost his first bid for a Congress seat in General Santos City in the 2007 elections.

Fellow lawmakers, supporters and critics alike, are advising Pacquiao not to rush into politics while he is still in the peak of his boxing career and just consider it after preparing for it and retiring from boxing.
