  • Boxers Who Faced The Greatest Adversity?

We've all heard a "tough guy" story about a boxer's trials and tribulations which they've faced inside and outside the ring.

In recent times, Paul Williams springs to mind after he suffered a debilitating injury which left him in a wheelchair. To this day he vows one day to walk and fight again. Prior to this, it's strongly suspected by some that Williams beat an Antonio Margarito who was wearing loaded gloves and consequently Williams could be one of the few fighters ever to defeat an opponent who was wearing loaded gloves.

Danny Jacobs might be considered another modern-day tough guy after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a life-threatening form of bone cancer, and being told he would never fight again, Jacobs returned to the ring a year after being diagnosed and continues to fight to this day.

And then there's the curious case of Babe Hunt (real name). In 1928, after beating Sully Montgomery on points over 10 rounds, Hunt went to hospital to have a growth removed from his spine. Only 2 months later he was back in the ring and won via 2nd round KO. 4 years after this, in 1933, Hunt was shot in his right hand but amazingly he returned to the ring to fight again less than 2 months after being shot..

Which other boxers faced great adversity?
