  • Chicago Discussion Thread

This has been brought up recently and well, there's always new murders in Chicago. So, I thought I'd start this thread, documenting the problem there. The more attention this gets, the more of an urge that will arise to do something about it.

56 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, including four fatally

Fifty-six people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, including four fatally, according to the Chicago Sun Times. This is the second time in the last month that at least 50 people in Chicago were injured by gun violence in the same weekend and comes right before the Fourth of July holiday, which saw more than 100 people shot in the city two summers ago.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, one person was killed and 20 people were injured in the first 12 hours of the weekend that began on Friday at 5 p.m and ended on Saturday at 5 a.m. One man was reportedly killed by an 18-year-old who shot him during an argument and ran off; another man, 32-year-old Andre Lyons, was killed killed on the sidewalk after an unknown person unleashed gunfire on the area; an unidentified man was found shot to death in East Garfield Park at dawn on Saturday.

Another victim was 17-year-old Jarise Baker. CBS Chicago reports Baker and his girlfriend were walking home shortly after midnight when a car passed by and shot them both. Baker was shot six times in the chest and upper body, while his girlfriend was wounded in the arm. Baker's family told CBS Chicago he was not involved in gangs or drugs.

This growth in gun violence comes at the same time that Chicago Police announced that shootings in the city have hit a four-year low. According to recent crime statistics released to CBS Chicago, 1,229 people have been shot in Chicago, about 100 fewer than the first six months of 2018, and the lowest total since 2015. Police also said there have been 236 murders through the end of June, 21 fewer than the same time period last year.

Man charged in fatal shooting of Northwestern PhD student Shane Colombo in Rogers Park

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man has been charged in the death of a Northwestern University PhD student who was caught in a crossfire in the Rogers Park neighborhood nearly a year ago.

On September 2, 2018, Shane Colombo was walking along Clark Street near Howard after buying groceries when he was shot and killed. The 25-year-old graduate student, an apparent unintended target of the gunman, was wounded in the chest, back and wrist and transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead.

Diante Speed, 20, is facing a first-degree murder charge after prosecutors allege that a video shows him chasing an unknown man with a gun on the night Colombo was killed. That same video also shows Colombo falling to the ground.

Speed was arrested Tuesday afternoon and is being held without bond.

Despite prosecutors believing there were multiple witnesses to to Rogers Park shooting, it took a weapon being retrieved from a gun arrest in South Holland to trace Speed to the murder scene.

Prosecutors said people only started talking after the ballistic evidence was a match.

"The unknown male who was the intended target fled from the defendant as he was firing," said James Murphy, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney. "There were two other witnesses in the Bank of America parking lot, who observed the victim get shot by the defendant and then collapse."

Prosecutors allege that Speed, of Chicago, confessed to holding a gun, but he denied firing the weapon.

Colombo was a native of Sun City, California, who was due to start a psychology Ph.D. program at Northwestern University last fall. His family offered a $2,000 reward for information identifying the shooter.

Victim advocate Andrew Holmes has been in touch with Colombo's mother in California.

"She is totally hurt, she can barely talk," Homes said. "Just doing a lot of crying."

They concede Chicago, that's just a 'it is what it is' to them.

would be cool if you did a different city, and be like, 'its more than just Chicago'!

39,000 homicides: Retracing 60 years of murder in Chicago

The spike in violent crime that has plagued Chicago since 2016 has even more gravity when viewed in comparison with six decades of homicides in Chicago. Since 1957, the city has had homicide totals of 700 27 of 62 years, and has been lower than 500 a third of the time, 19 of 62 years. To understand this long-term view, the Tribune asked two experts to give perspective as to what was behind Chicago crime decade by decade, and combed through news coverage going back to the 1960s. The Tribune turned to John Hagedorn, a professor of criminology at the University of Illinois at Chicago who has written extensively on Chicago's gangs as well as Wyndell Watkins, a retired Washington, D.C., deputy chief of police with more than 40 years of public safety experience. Here is a closer look at the numbers and some of the influences behind them.
