So is it a bad thing to sign with a promoter now?

Depends, at some point of your career you are going to need some help. Whether its a promoter/manager or adviser. But there comes a point when you don't need one. Some fighters reach that point earlier on in their careers, whilst some do so later on in their careers.

You got to look at history, RJJ failed miserably in his matchmaking.
Who's doing so good in your opninion to warrant such a question?

canelo is the only guy with a promoter that is making big bucks.
nobody at top rank is raking in big bucks
nobody at GBP besides canelo is raking in big bucks
nobody at K2 is raking in big bucks
the pbc guys average a million dollars per fight without a promoter, which is more than Crawford and the same as golovkin and they have promoters.
social media is the new promoter

Some fighters need a promoter, other do not. A promoter is good fro a young fighter and one that has a hard time filling seats. If a fighter reaches the peak of a Floyd, Manny, ODH, GGG, Canelo, Tyson or some other top draws, you can argue they do not need a promoter anymore.

Depends on a fighter! I think the best thing for a fighter to do is just to fight as much as they can, build up a following and let a network come find you and offer you a exclusive deal with their Network which is basically what happened to Jacobs
Fighters have to be very patient though, Fame and Super Stardom is not going to happen quickly. It took Mayweather and Pacquiao YEARS to reach the levels they reached.
Things are happening fast for AJ because AJ won a Gold Medal during they year his Country was Hosting the Olympics so the moment started early for him

Anthony Joshua doesn’t need a promoter. Neither does Broner or Errol Spence. Robert Guerrero made 3 million in 2 fights without a promoter lol.

Who at Golden Boy Promotions is making that kind of money besides Canelo?
Whoever (Haymon) is paying Spence 3.5 million bucks is losing money on the fight. I think we all know that. I think the idea' is to spike the Spence brand in hopes of getting future earnings.
Amir Khan is still with GBP.

Klitschko's have been with K2:

I thought Klitschko's owned K2, but I think I'm mistaken as Tom Loeffler owns it?
Haymon is making these guys a lot of money. But lets not get it twisted, his fighters aren't promoting themselves so they have to be piggy-backing off another promotional company. So some of the top cats are switching promoters for Haymon (Manager), but you got to have decent stock to do that.
Times are changing for sure. I'm for whatever gets the fighter the most money because they're putting their lives on the line to entertain us.
