Maybe because that’s when men are about full grown.
An 18 year old kid is still growing and doesn’t have that grown man strength yet.

Wilder has been boxing 13 years and Joshua 11. They might not have started young but have had plenty of training.

Mike Tyson won a title after only 5 years of training.

athletic talent. they're 6.5 feet tall and 225-250 lbs and they're still agile. most of those guys from the US don't box. they get scholarships and play d1 sports in college. the best go pro and make millions.

wilder and joshua are going against legit plebeian athletic talent. i mean that seriously. you'll find tens of thousands of kids more talented than tony thompson playing scholastic football and basketball in high schools and colleges across the country.

what really scares the brits about wilder is that he's not a unique talent. he's just a dude who started boxing at 20 instead of playing football for alabama. yeah, he's athletic, but he's not unique! we are all deontay wilder!

****, if i could play d1 and nail gorgeous girls and go to school for free instead of taking punches to the head, i would! that's an easy decision! these kids are steered toward the ncaa from a very, very young age.

i get why a tiny guy would box. he can't make it in other sports where size is at a premium. but there's no early reason for a talented, big athlete in the US to box. none. there are a myriad of opportunities to do other things that don't involve getting punched.

Well I say it’s the fact that boxing isn’t as popular as it was before the 80’s.

At least here in the US, I’ve gone to several amateur tournaments only to find there was no one to fight in my weight class. (As an amateur I fight at heavyweight)

I have an old trainer (66 years old) and he said that in the 70’s and before there was always a lot of boxers in every weight class but now there are fewer and fewer boxers because everyone is playing football or other less demanding sports.

So smaller talent pool of world class athletes at heavyweight the easier it is to rise to the top.

Hell MMA is much worse at heavyweight

Because the Heavyweight division is bereft of any real boxing talent today, thus allowing them to get by on being more powerful and athletic than their opponents, along with some basic skilled they have polished up to a decent enough level, more so in Joshua's case anyway.

Neither are elite fighters, they're just lucky that there's no elite fighters in their division. Wlad of around 6-7 years ago would have destroyed these two. Fury would make them look very basic if he gets back to his best too.

Why do Wilder fans brag about his late start and the fact he got Olympic Bronze yet they don't acknowledge Joshua's almost equally late start and Olympic Gold and the fact he won a title in far less fights, beat a ranked opponent in less fights, unified a title in far less fights and defeated an elite opponent in far less fights?
