Simple, he was scared. Rather than get waxed by Lewis he chose to toss his title in the trash. Rock Newman did not do him any favors by ducking Lewis just so he can get brain damaged at the hands of Golota. Bowe had a lot of potential. He should have allowed Eddie Futch to be a bigger influence in his life instead of Newman and all the trappings of entourages and mansions.

Any fighter who can own a great champion like Holyfield fears no fighter. I don't think he avoided Lewis, his manager thought they could milk the title with 1 or 2 easy defenses and then let the fight marinate kinds like the present Canelo situation. Then politics took over. Bad move by Rock Newman. Bowe when he was serious could do it all in the ring and he had a great chin. He would have KO'd the Lewis china chin. The wars with Holyfield did him in as well as the weight issues. Lewis would have beaten Bowe around the time Bowe fought Golata. Bowe was a shell of himself then.
Instead of the Bowe Holyfield rematch it should have been Bowe Lewis. Then the undeafeated Bowe should have rematched Holyfield.
