A strange man who doesn't really do much until the last 5 minutes of the film.

Its been a longtime since i saw it.

Everything about the film paints a bleak picture of society. Its like he's a voyeur that gets swallowed up by the streets. Travis is a lonely, paranoid guy that becomes more strange and unstable, yet people relate to his repulsion of the city and its people, eventhough he is very much part of it.
You see the world through his eyes. The way its shot. The music. It all mirrors his mind. Slow and oddly empty.

Thats the key to appreciating the film i think. Thats its not meant to be dramatic and entertaining. But its the world shown to you through the mind of Travis. Oddly empty, detached, moody, pessimistic. The film is more about mood than plot.

I think I was expecting something completely different, that's probably why I didn't like it.

The music in it is terrible though... it's way too repetitive.

Man, I'll just say that I STRONGLY disagree with you about this. One of my all time favorite movies.

I cannot believe that this is rated higher than Raging Bull

Exactly. Everything about the film is to give the audience the view of the world that Travis Bickle has

I think you have might have gone into the movie expecting something like Goodfellas or Casino.

Visually it's fantastic and the movie score is one of the best a movie has ever had and fits perfect into the story. It's really a character study of a lonely person in a big city portrayed flawlessly by De Niro and filmed beautifully by Scorsese. I think you need to give it a second chance and really try to relate to the character and view everything to from his point of view.

It's posts like these that make me think that there may still be hope for The Lounge here on boxingscene
