Alvarez is great like Oscar was great.

Fights most of the good fighters with many close calls.

In the era where the best boxer in the world is at best a B+, yes, he's great. In the real sense of the word, like someone mentioned Floyd and Sugar Ray, I'd say he's a very good fighter (B+), not great (A).

The only boxer I can be comfortable calling a great right now is Juan Francisco Estrada. He entered it with his last fight. Many more, including Canelo, have the potential to be.

Floyd was a great fighter. Sugar Ray Leonard was a great fighter.

Do a couple close fights with Golovkin make him a great fighter? I don't know. Most Canelo fans spent their whole lives on this forum claiming Golovkin is an overrated piece of garbage. If that were true, Canelo The Great would have sparked him out. But what really happened is that Canelo the very good fighter lost the first fight in most people's minds, and ground out a close win in a competitive rematch against a guy turning 36 in a couple weeks.

What about Canelo's other Great wins? Well, against Lara he was the aggressor, but with few exceptions, he was unable to cut off the ring and impose his will. Probably should have been a draw rather than a split decision victory for Canelo -- but he always gets the loveliest cards. Which doesn't make him a Great fighter.

Canelo DID go up against a Great fighter once. How did that turn out? Well, one judge said he fought to a draw, which must make Canelo Great, right? Sure! I think he won a single round at most against old Grandpappy Mayweather.

He still has plenty of career left, and perhaps he will become Great. He does seem to improve over time, which is important. He's definitely prime now, and if he's Great -- like Marvelous Marvin Hagler -- he will turn Danny Jacobs into a pile of dog crap, no problem.
And he lost against Lara. Sure, Lara was being too defensive at times, and Canelo was landing some sick body shots, but Canelo did not look like a winner. Canelo fans are amnesiac too, even I forgot that he tested positive for Clenbuterol which tainted even further that "draw" in his first fight vs GGG. Far from a great fighter.

Yes but like I said, why do trainers and boxers credit Canelo’s skill so high? Even Paulie Malignaggi, whom hates Canelo, said he is an elite world level fighter and that Pacquiao never wasn’t. This is the same Paulie that criticized Pac for being a “dirty” fighter.

First of all, he's built a really good resume for himself; say what you want, from the attempt to get Paul Williams on, Alvarez has sought out and taken the best fights possible for the most part, as a superstar fighter no less.

Secondly, Alvarez can fight his ass off. Brawl/box, inside/mid/long, to the body or head, fight in combination or on placed shots, slick when he needs to be, sit in the storm when he needs to, with Barry a sign of quit in him.

His feet are slow, and he doesn't have the stamina/energy management to simply go full clip for 12 rounds, but he basically hits every other box there is.

You respect the ability until you see him do something that makes you not respect the ability (namely quit).

But fans forget that punch variety is the context. Why do you think Showtime commentary said Wallisch was waiting for Ajagba to tire himself out in the 1st round? Why did Angulo and Kirkland tire each other out in the 1st first, hence, ''punch themselves out.''

Canelo was criticized most of his career about this idea for stamina. Again, the more POWER PUNCHES and COMBINATIONS any HEAVY hitter exerts will TIRE YOU OUT! Golovkin has upper echelon defense as well and made Canelo miss many of his power punches in the first fight, and that tiredness showed!

Then Canelo went 365 and 120 days of VADA testing and WENT HARDER IN THE PAINT with power punches and taking shots in the rematch!

That alone destroys any theory about stamina issues. Thing is people make up these narratives and people roll with it that it becomes cliché.

Canelo is 28. He is in his Prime and has enough experience where he doesn't need to go balls out as he did in his younger days. Same reason why Floyd had a higher output rate with power punches and COMBINATIONS when he was younger. Floyd at the end of his career coasted solely on Defense and may critics didn't like that. Nothing wrong with it, but that in itseld when not ''engaging'' as much making your opponents miss while you move tires the other more, which is why elite level can go 12 without a problem, and Canelo hasn't hit the post Floyd age as well.

Most boxers can't even ACCURATELY connect a combination as ALVAREZ did against Josesito Lopez whom took a knee while being pulverized with his guard up. That move in itself tires out any boxer. That's why Canelo fights in spurts. I thought this was always obvious. Fighters are aware of the stamina throughout rounds. If you're just jabbing away on the point system of course you can go 12 easily.

              WAR DAZN!

He isn't a great fighter, he is a goodish fighter who is promoted very well. If he was that good he wouldn't have had all those catchweight fights to keep his size advantage. He has lost several fights that was awarded to him because of the sheer revenue he brings in. His success is due to his huge Mexican following that promoters and venues cannot ignore due to the millions involved . He is now taking the piss with the Golovkin trilogy by saying Golovkin needs a title before he fights him again, what titles did he have when Golovkin fought HIM?..he knows he will lose again that is the real reason. The situation we are in at the moment with Canelo having the belts and his messing Golovkin about is the same as when Riddick Bowe had the belts and messed Lennox Lewis about by not wanting to, fight him

They say he is a great boxer because it's true. He wasn't anywhere near great when he fought Mayweather. He kept improving every fight and was better but still not great when he fought Trout and Lara and Cotto. He still kept improving a lot every fight. He was better than ever when he murdered Chavez Jr. And Smith. He was coming into his greatness when he honed his skills and learned from two close wars with GGG. His brutal beating of Fielding showed how good he has become. Lara would get KOed in a rematch in my opinion. I think he beats Jacobs with no help from the judges.
