Collins was a solid fighter and tough as old boots. Style wise he was wrong for roy and roy knew it.

Says the man who shamelessly ducked out of the Calzaghe fight last minute because he knew full well he was going to lose.Eubank stepped in, and then Collins magically got better and started calling out Jones a few years later.

it might have a lot to do with Colllins being only a WBO champ, which held no significance at the time. The WBO in fact disencouraged unifications in order to keep their champions and create a legacy for their organisation.

If you look at it incontext, Jones wanted to chase Jones, who had official titles. Winning a WBO title against Joe would mean the WBO pulling his strings again, disencouraging him from facing Jones.
You do have to look at it that context too - facing a British champ like Joe Calzaghe was a major stepdown for Collins...his weakest recent opponent was Carr, a higher class of opponent than Joe. So why would he want to take it when he was owed better? Joe by comparison remained little league for another 8 years.
The facts that he didnt face Calzaghe AND wanted Jones make perfect sense.
In retrospect it was great news for Joe, as Collins may well have outclassed him. A lot of Joes legacy is built on no defeats, rather than his wins.Last edited by DreamFighter; 03-24-2019, 01:43 PM.
