  • Comments Thread For: Frank Warren on Cleverly, Haye, Flintoff, Scott Harrison

This evening WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly endeavours to become the first Welshman since the Second World War to win a world title fight on US soil when he defends his belt for a fourth time at the futuristic Staples Center in Los Angeles, with new friend Mickey Rourke and fellow Welshman Sir Tom Jones at ringside.

Initially, the maths graduate was tabled to defend a fortnight ago, against a little known but dangerous Ukrainian at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena. However, that always represented a sideways step so we canned it in favour of getting ‘Clev’ the US exposure that could be crucial in elevating him into the unification fights that everyone is demanding against rival champions Chad Dawson (WBC), Tavoris Cloud (IBF) or Beibut Shumenov (WBA).

And make no mistake, I would unleash Nathan against any of the above, or Bernard Hopkins, and be fully confident that he’d emerge victorious whether those prospective fights took place in the US or the UK.

Going to the US seems to have gotten Roach and GBP interested, but I don't think it's going to have much of an effect on the American public.

Slightly surprised to see the joke about Korean's eating dogs.

No mention of Kevin Mitchell's twitter rant about not getting paid! No shock there, Warren's a crook!

Cleverly would do well to secure a new trainer but not Roach, nor is he the fighter that GBP should be investing time in. Warren needs to lose about half of his stable too.

Roach did a pretty decent job with chavez jnr who has a similar style to cleverly. Obviously jnr was taken apart by martinez but a few years back people were talking about jnr in extremely derogatory terms (possibly rightfully). Cleverly is never going to be a long range back foot fighter or particularly defensively astute fighter. Strength, strong legs and stamina is what will carry him to success if he has any. If his chin is so much worse than jnr's such that he'll never be able to pull off the style then he simply won't be successful, period, because he's not changing any time soon.

Clev at the top-level will be a complete non-puncher. Americans wont like him.

yes...feels like quite a racially inappropriate comment to me.

surprising given how carefully everyone else has to word their opinions in case they upset the poor fella's little ego.

the only question worth considering now is who to call first... the south korean embassy or the north korean government LOL

You can bet they'll be digging up a dead body for debut boy Flintoff to face. Jimmy Savile, maybe.
