  • nicknames that stuck

Some fighters are ALWAYS associated to with their nicknames. I'm not talking about those who used a different name to turn pro (Jersey Joe Walcott, Kid Gavilan, etc.) or someone who changed their name during their career (Muhammad Ali). We can also skip all the Rocky's and Sugar's. Just fighters that you always refer to by their nicknames. Obvious examples:

    Ronald "Winky" Wright
    Saul "Canelo" Alvarez
    James "Bonecrusher" Smith

    Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter
    Pernell 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker
    'Smokin' Joe Frazier
    'The Golden Boy' ODLH
'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler (If that counts)
    'Prince' Naseem Hamed

Nobody in their right mind walks up to Earnie Shavers on the street and says "Are you Acorn head?"

As NChristo mentioned, 'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler, he legally changed his name adding Marvelous so it even says it on his drivers license and passport.

Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns: I remember a time where Hearns wanted to be called "Motor City Cobra" rather than the previous "Hitman" because "Hitman" refered to someone that killed people, but to this day, he is still refered to "The Hitman"
