16 and 17 is a big difference than 12. Picture Junior/Senior in Highschool vs 6th grade. Also 16 is the legal age throughout Europe, and I doubt any of them are marriages to 80 year olds.

But I'm not trying to appease anyone. I don't think what's going on in the OP is acceptable.

When many of our own states have no minimum age of marriage as long as there is parental consent and/or judicial approval, we look stupid to the countries whose marriage practices we turn around and criticize.

Yes, it's true that most teenagers who get married aren't marrying old people in this country... but that wasn't my point. My point is that it is possible in this country, and it does occasionally happen, for people well under 18 to get married to people well over 18. There are multiple documented examples of this.
