  • That time Robin Reid's crooked cronies tried to get Joe Calzaghe to eat glass...

WORLD boxing champion Joe Calzaghe found broken glass in coffee and an ice cream during meals on two successive nights in the run-up to last night's showdown with Robin Reid at the Telewest Arena in Newacstle.

Fight promoter Frank Warren said he believed the glass was planted by someone trying to nobble the fighter before the high-profile bout. "We think it's a malicious act by someone trying to jeopardise and sabotage the fight and the whole show," Warren said. "These sort of things are not a coincidence. I'm furious and disgusted and we are carrying out a full investigation, as is the hotel."

WBO super-middleweight champion Calzaghe, who was in the dining area of the Copthorne Hotel, Newcastle, with Warren and fellow fighter Richie Woodhall when he found the glass on both Thursday and Friday evenings, was said to be mystified about where it could have come from. Woodhall, who was also due to fight on the bill, and was eating with him, raised the alarm when he noticed the shards of glass in Calzaghe's food.

Calzaghe and Reid were due to meet last night as part of a pay-per-view boxing extravaganza labelled the War of the Worlds. The Calzaghe-Reid showdown was one of the star bouts on the card, with Woodhall's super-middleweight clash with Italian Vincenzo Nardiello.

Calzaghe's wife Mandy said that he had rung her about the incidents, which had left him mystified but unshaken. Mrs Calzaghe said: "I spoke to Joe last night and he told me he had some ice cream and there were two pieces of glass in it. The night before there was some glass in his coffee and he does not know where it came from.

"Thankfully, nothing serious happened, and it won't affect Joe. He will not be bothered about it and will not be wanting to make a fuss. It won't unsettle him and there's no doubt he will go on to win this fight."

Northumbria Police said they were aware of the incidents but had not been asked to investigate. Sgt Ian Hole said: "The Copthorne Hotel has not contacted us about this matter." Nobody at the Copthorne hotel was available for comment.
This happened in 1999 in the week leading up to their fight.

FFS, if you have to handicap your opponent, you're too much of a pu$$y to be a boxer in the first place.
