  • Do we ever know why Roy Jones ducked Tommy Hearns?

And instead fought a WAY past sell date Mike McCallum, not even wanting to really hurt him, in a stinker?

This is when both guys were campaigning at middleweight and Hearns had lost his speed but seemed to have a much higher ring IQ. Kind of like an older Tarver.

Do we know why that fight never happened? It would have been interesting to see - to that point Jones had never taken a punch from that kind of a hitter (in a fight where he was actually at risk).

Roy would have beaten an older and fat Tommy Hearns.

Do we ever know why Roy Jones ducked the lineal champ Lennox Lewis to fight John Ruiz instead?

I think anyone who fights smart would have beaten Jones. The guys he beat thought they could outwork him, but nobody could outwork him at that time. Look at the guys he originally lost to - smart workers who didn't overextend themselves. Prime Hearns put himself out there all the time which is how Hagler sparked him. Late game Hearns was a MUCH more calculated, well-rounded fighter.

Up until just before retirement he was still sparking dudes, and he'd only ever lost to some of the best to ever do it. Had Hearns and Jones met before Jones met Tarver, I don't know that Jones would have left on his feet.

True. But he'd wanted the fight before they both moved up. That would have been early 90's-ish, before Toney. He called him out again at cruiser/light heavy. Then the Tarver spark happened.

The original call was at middleweight/super middleweight though.

Regardless: looking at the paths of both fighters. Hearns was still dangerous in the 90's and Jones peaked around 95. Which means it wouldn't have been this easy walk like people think.
