Does Joe Louis' dominance warrant being top 2 ATG HW despite lack of quality?

That is an awesome video. Should be mandatory viewing for all young boxers.

In particular I liked the part about setting up the right hand by slipping a jab to the outside. Seeing Joe putting this concept into action was beautiful to watch.

Lots of other things to learn as well, though.

jack Blackburn was such a very good trainer. Ray Arcel had so much respect for him. He was also a very underrated fighter as well.

Yes, yes it does, to answer the original question. Because there were real men back then, not these no name fruity sloughs we've seen since the early 2000s. Not saying they were all better in the past, but a lot of them were.

This looks good against the mediocre foes. He had serious shortcomings when facing better opposition, though, as seen with Schmeling, Walcott, Charles. And his prime was brief. A fighter like Ali would have made him look silly.

Against Schmeling he was a kid just turning 22 years old. Max was in his 60th pro fight and fought all the greats prior to the Louis first fight.
Walcott and Charles were after his best but he did well in winning and loosing against them.
You also omit the time he missed because of WW 2, everyone stresses the time Ali missed but no one remebers the time Louis missed, a little thing called WW2

Ali would need to be VERY careful with Louis, Joe would stalk him like Frazier did and Louis was much more dangerous than Frazier
People also forget that Louis was 6' 2" and could have fought at 210 easily in his prime.
Back in those days heavies trimmed down their weight for more speed and stamina.

The punch variety is something we'll never see in a Klitschko video against their mediocre foes, that's for sure.

Joe was a master craftsman in his chosen field. It's plain to see.

The reality is the Klits are huge well conditioned men fighting in a weaker era than Louis. People point out a lack of size in Joe's era constantly but besides Vlad fighting and losing to Lewis as he was about to retire what is the highest skill level these fellows have faced ?Conn, Walcott, Schemling were ring genius as was Charles Both Max and Jersey Joe could crack as well. Max Baer could as well although he did not have the around skills he had an amazing chin. He got knocked down by Joe and got up a few times but after the fight said if people want to witness an execution they are gonna have to pay me more!

Apples and oranges, but you know that. Louis was crafty at what he did, Vladimir was a master at what he did. Louis wouldn't stand a chance against him btw, but let's not get started on that.

As usual, right on the money is Mr Corso. We fight the way we train...fifteen round fights mean fighting at a lighter weight if we take our training seriously. For example, Louis was able to beat Conn because he could stalk him into the later rounds. Proof of how training translates into a game plan. Great to see you are still on the boards Ray.
