Card and contactless payments overtake cash for first time

Card payments have overtaken cash for the first time ever, according to the latest figures from the British Retail Consortium.

The British Retail Consortium's (BRC's) annual Payments Survey shows more than half of all retail transactions were paid for by card rather than cash in 2016.

Personally it makes me feel uneasy. Something Orwellian about all your purchases being recorded and banks and governments having the ability to shut you down.

Not only that but I prefer using cash to budget, I find I tend to overspend with cards.

I am sorta on the fence. On the one hand, it's nice to have cash transactions that aren't strictly recorded. Feels a lot less big brother-y.

On the other hand, dealing with change can be a hassle. Dealing with putting cash into machines can be a hassle. And ordering online pretty much requires a card.

Also, credit card companies charge a fee and there are vendors that will just pass that fee back on to you.

                I'm split either way..

I understand the caution about not having physical cash

But I also understand that technology has made it somewhat obsolete

But there is a sinister, deep state motive to lure people into giving up cash. A cashless economy allows the government to fully control your holdings at banks. So authorities can charge negative rates, as in Japan, where they can literally deduct or charge fees from accounts without legal recourse.
RIP privacy & freedom. People also typically overspend with cards.

                  Cashless society is pure ****.
