Default If writers follow the Gatti clause, what current fighters make the hall?

I think off the top of my head guys like Maidana,Salido, and Provodnikov should be locks. It would be interesting to see how many fighters currently fighting or recently retired deserve the action fighter clause. Also what specific guidelines would they have to meet to be eligible? I personally think that five action/war fights with a minimum participation in three fight of the year candidates would be a decent starting point.

maidana, salido, and provodnikov have been in great fights, but if you think they're in teh same realm as arturo gatti in terms of his ability to produce action you're nuts.

he bled more than provodnikov.
hit harder than maidana [in his weight classes. remember thaty gatti started at 130 lbs.] maidana was heavy handed. gatti had power.

gatti would get hurt and busted up and still be able to come back. he did it so many times. there's never been a fighter that exciting. his management deserves a lot of credit for seeing his decline, eventually gettin him to work with a boxing first trainer, and letting him rebuild after he had hard years with lots of brutal fights. they basically prolonged the wild excitement. great matchmaking for an action fighter, too. some of the best ever, really. if you put him in there with floyd mayweather and oscar de la hoya he's going to get pounded. put him in there with micky ward and ivan robinson and he's in one of the best fights you're ever going to see.

add in that he died under mysterious circumstances or committed suicide and it's no wonder that he is in the hall of fame. you guys probably don't understand just how exciting he was, and the kind of buzz that surrounded his fights on the networks. this wasn't a p4p star on ppv. the guy fought on regular HBO and filled up casinos. people watched him because of how he fought, not who he was and what kind of billing / title he had. they used to make fights, not fighters. gatti was a staple of that era, and he drew people to boxing.

i watched gatti - ward 1 live on hbo, and i will literally never forget it. it totally changed the game for me.

If Ruslan gets in the HOF, There's really no point in having a HOF

What his best W, Alvarado and a close fight with Bradley ( Who will be in the HOF)

You can do the same thing with Gatti. Who was his best win? The entire category is about entertainment not wins or loses.

Him dying from a tragedy, while being a very sad moment for boxing should have zero merit towards him getting in the hall. He is probably least skilled than all of the guys that I mentioned except for Provodnikov. Boxing is in a different space Katsidis/Gatti types are never going to be long term stars anymore. I just chose the guys that I felt most closely met the criteria.

gatti had much better boxing skills than madaian and salido. please watch the fights.

i didn't say that he should get in because of how he died, i said that considering the timeliness of his death it is no wonder that people voted for him.

i'd have voted for him on the right year if i had a hall of fame vote. he's widely considered the most entertaining boxer ever, and in the end that's why we watch the fights.

I disagree about him being more skilled than Salido or Maidana. You can also say the same thing about chico's death as Gatti 's and he participated in what most consider to be the most entertaining fight of all time. He was not a first ballot hall of famer. Him being the most entertaining fighter of all time is both subjective and and unfair. Who's to say that a Katsidis wouldn't have been equally entertaining if matched carefully and backed by HBO win or loss.

you can disagree with an objective reality if you would like

. gatti had a very good jab, good footwork, fast hands, punched with fluidity when he threw combinations.

maidana and salido are much more workmanlike. less talent. better chins without a doubt, and maidana is much bigger, but not as physically talented or as skilled in terms of their boxing abilities.

^^^This right here! Gatti was known for his grit and determination. He could get beat up, bloodied and battered, yet somehow still manage to dig deep down and pull a trick out of his hat that would change the whole fight. Were there other fighters out there with better skill sets? Of course, but very few had the kind of balls that Arturo Gatti had. That's why Jim Lampley & HBO boxing came up with the Gatti list; to recognize those who remind them of this boxing great.
