l assume the herb existed for millions of years, making it disappear is equivalent to an asteroid as big as mount everest hitting the earth point blank. lol

That's how it goes. Powerful drug companies should be protected. My father died from terminal cancer. Chemotherapy didn't help him at all it just made him suffer more and so our pockets.

Sorry bro. Chemo does more damage than cancer itself half the time, and even if it extends your lifespan by a few months, hell even a year, you're suffering the whole time. It's a ****ty thing to deal with.

Interesting you should say that:

From the article it refers not to a "chinese herb" (which is actually wormwood) but to a chemical which can be derived from the plant. You can't patent a plant but you can patent...

So what has actually happened here is that a promising lead has been developed and a new compound synthesized, along with a process for implementing it which enhances its efficacy. Both the new compound and the process are patentable. This is a new process and as such human trials haven't begun yet. But it's not a panacaea. If successful it will join the suite of treatments already available for cancer, it's not going to be necessarily replacing any existing methods.

I wanted to finish off my reading of the article by pointing out the strange sign-off:

Using artemisin to treat cancer means introducing chemicals into the patient's body. In other words if this treatment turns out to prove safe and effective it's not a replacement for chemotherapy, it is chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy works by killing cells, but the challenge is to target the cancerous cells and leave the healthy tissue relatively undamaged. Based purely on the posted article Artemisinin shows promise but needs considerable further development. It's really not the thing to start ordering online and trying to treat yourself.

By the way the drug in question is already used in treating malaria. It is synthesized by pharmaceutical companies.

The effectiveness of chemotherapy depends on the type of cancer and the stage it't at. Some cancers are resistant to chemotherapy. All chemotherapy does the same thing: It kills cells. The hope is to kill off the cancer cells before it does too much damage to the patient's healthy cells.

Through advances in chemo- and radio-therapies survival rates for most cancers are improving and the impact of the side effects of the treatment are getting much better. It's unfortunate that medical quacks and charlatans are so eager to exploit the lack of understanding most people have with regards to cancer in order to sell ineffective snake-oils to people who are dying.

Chemotherapy works. The side effects are unpleasant, but the treatment works. That's why we use it.
