Amir Khan to wear £20,000 shorts against Devon Alexander

Why Amir Khan will sparkle regardless of the outcome against Devon Alexander

AMIR KHAN is looking to dazzle against Devon Alexander on Saturday but whether he wins or not, he will most certainly sparkle.

Khan is boxing in a pair of trunks that have been dubbed “the world’s most expensive boxing shorts,” which could be as much as £20,000 (though some are saying £30,000) with a waistband alone that comes in at £15,000.

They are genuine white lamb nappa leather shorts with black crocodile embossed lamb leather side panels. There’s a 24 carat gold woven fabric waistband and 100 per cent silk golden tiger print lining.

Fight Label, a Sheffield company, have created them.

The ‘KHAN’ embroidery features raised sections for a three-dimensional feel, with the Union Jack and a 24 carat gold fabric base.

They took a day to make, embroider and assemble and were designed by Sophie Whittam, a fashion designer for 10 years.

She was the costume designer for Team GB Olympic figure skaters and her experience, as a skater, gives her a knowledge of what it takes as a dedicated athlete and how after all the preparation and training for the main event, it is important that you look your best. “When you look your best, you feel your best and in turn enhances your performance,” she said.

“I have been overwhelmed by such an amazing response to Fight Label, my designs and shorts so far. It is great to have Amir at such an early stage in the business and really excited to showcase our finest materials. I want every fighter to have the WOW factor on fight night, it is like stepping into character when you wear Fight Label shorts you are stepping into fight mode.”

When Eddie Gregory, later Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, was dropped before coming back to defeat Matthew Franklin, later Matthew Saad Muhammad in 1977, the force of the knockdown split his trunks. He had to use a spare pair from one of the fighters in the co-feature, a bout between Vito Antufermo and Eugene ‘Cyclone’ Hart. Khan doesn’t have a reserve pair either, or at least not another £20,000 pair.

Con should invest some of that money into chin surgery. Drop some cast iron in that baby.
