Just look at Buchanan's reaction when the punch landed. Duran should have had points deducted (a) for hitting after the bell and,(b) punching below the belt. No way borderline!
Buchanan then should have been given time to recover.
Don Dunphy, surprise, surprise, had nothing critical to say about the referee, big pal?
We have seen dozens of fights since when fighters have been given time to recover (wearing protectors!) for far less powerful blows South of the Border!
Pretty sure i read some where that the punch was hard enough that it dented his protector.

      "dented his protector"................

Have you ever seen, felt or worn a "steel" cup?

You need a hammer to dent them.......

Ken was a tough guy and a good fighter but Duran would have beat him soundly in a rematch.

I read it some where in an article on the internet, but the internet is full of mis-information and myth. I've only worn / seen the cheap cups (plastic moulded didn't realize they did steel) From what i remember Duran was beating him soundly in the first match.

Duran should've been disqualified since Buchanan couldn't continue. Plus he needed testicular surgery after the fight, so he was hurt very badly by the shot.

the low blow happened in between rounds and the ref grabbed duran trying to stop both him and ken from punching after the bell. He (the ref} may not have witnessed the punch under those circumstances.

Kenny finally landed some decent shots near the end of that round and got momentarily the better of Duran. This got the Scotsman excited and he kept on punching after the bell. Duran will keep firing in this circumstance. It may have been the ref grabbing Duran's arm that caused it, or it may have been Duran's reaction to being fouled, which punching after the bell is. Should have been a rematch, though it is almost entirely certain Duran would have won handily. Buchanan, a fine boxer and tough, simply did not have the punch to dent a chin of Duran's caliber, while Duran's punch remained destructive even at higher weights.

Buchanan was a great fighter, really skilled, nice movement, good jab and great footwork and he was tough, he tried to fight back but to be honest, Duran was beating the hell out of him, he barely lost a round and IMO Buchanan was looking for a Montell Griffith moment to retain his belt.
Buchanan was a great fighter but there's no way that he could have won that fight and Duran was only going to get better after the fight.

Here is a non sequitur comment: if you watch the fight note the jackets worn by Duran's seconds. He must have been campaigning under the pseudonym "Rocky Duran" at one time or another. But that night he is introduced as "Roberto.'

"Rocky" might have been is nickname until somebody came up with "Manos de Piedra" (Hands of Stone) Who knows?!
