The difference was that Lara smothered him. Every time Paul closed the distance Lara held. Martinez didn't even do that which is why Sergio got hit way more than Lara did.
Lara just fought a perfect fight. That is how you fight Paul Williams. Martinez set the blueprint in terms of what punch can land against Paul, but Lara took that blueprint a step further.
Cotto, Angulo, Canelo, Margarito, and most of the other top guys at 154 would not do that and I would still favor Paul over all of the above.
