  • [PLEASE HELP] Is this Roberto Cruz (de la Cruz) - old photo need confirmation

    Hi!

I'm hoping a historical boxing fan or old timer can help me. I'm working on my geneology, specifically learning about my filipino relatives who I have never met (I was born in the states & have never been to PI). I found the photo (attached) in a box that belonged to my great-grandmother. The back says "To my Anty" and is signed "Roberto de la Cruz"

I am wondering if it is THE Roberto Cruz (WBA World Light Welterweight title holder from 1955 to 1968).

There aren't many photos of him online and I've only found grainy newspaper clippings. There seems to be a resemblance but I'm not certain.

    Any help is appreciated! Salamat

I added the photo as my avatar and created an album for it on this site, on my profile. Any help is appreciated! Thanks for your patience!

I'm sorry to have seen this thread only now.

              Actually...
De la Cruz was professionally ACTIVE from 1955 to 1968,
and was WBA junior welter champ from March to June of 1963.

As for the picture, there's quite a resemblance to known photos
of him from the March 1963 triple-title card. Keep in mind that
your photo is of a fighter who isn't likely cutting weight for a fight,
and may be from years AFTER 1963, whereas the following show
a dela Cruz in prime, ripped shape.

              From L-R:
Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Roberto dela Cruz, Ultiminio "Sugar" Ramos,
Emile Alfonse Griffith, Raymundo "Battling" Torres, and Davey Moore,
who tragically died as a result of his KO loss to Sugar Ramos.

De la Cruz, only a substitute, won the title from KO artist
Raymundo "Battling" Torres via KO1 at Dodger Stadium.

Winners on the abovementioned night (L-R):
Luis Rodriguez, Roberto dela Cruz, Sugar Ramos.
Unknown to them, Davey Moore was about to be rushed to Loma Linda
Hospital. Moore had been able to give a postfight interview, before
complaining of a severe headache, then slipping into a coma.

The following June, Cruz lost the title UD (KD1) to Eddie Perkins
at Rizal Stadium in Manila. His purse for the match was allegedly
$12,500, minus the usual management and other fees, expenses
              and taxes.

Wow! Thank you so much for all of that information! Yes, there definitely seems to be a resemblance but I agree he's not in the same shape as the photos you posted, if it is the same man. Thank you!
