Default REPORT | Tyron Woodley vs. Nate Diaz in discussions for UFC 219

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley could potentially be defending his title against Nate Diaz at UFC 219.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Earlier today BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor confirmed that Nate Diaz had started a new fight camp and was closing in on a deal which would see him return at the December 30 event in Las Vegas.

This evening MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani confirmed that a bout between Woodley and Diaz was being discussed by UFC officials but that no deal has been reached as of yet.

Nate Diaz has not competed since UFC 202 where he suffered a majority decision loss to current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in a bout contested at welterweight.

“The Stockton Slugger” had previously defeated “Mystic Mac” at UFC 196 by way of second-round submission (rear-naked choke).

Meanwhile, Tyron Woodley was most recently seen in action at July’s UFC 214 event in Anaheim, where he successfully defended his title against submission specialist Demian Maia.

“T-Wood” has gone 5-0-1 over his past six octagon appearances scoring wins over Dong Hyun Kim, Kelvin Gastelum, Robbie Lawler, Stephen Thompson and the aforementioned Demian Maia in that time.

Woodley’s last loss came way back at UFC 174 in June of 2014 when he was outpointed by former title challenger Rory MacDonald.

Who do you think will emerge victorious if Tyron Woodley and Nate Diaz square off for the welterweight title at UFC 219 on December 30 in Las Vegas? Sound off PENN Nation!

Default Tyron Woodley Releases Statement on Possible Nate Diaz Fight at UFC 219

As soon as strength and conditioning coach Jose Garcia released a blurb on Instagram about Nate Diaz entering into his fight camp, the MMA world got set ablaze with wild speculation. However, sometimes reality can be stranger than fiction. Out of all the swirling rumors, it seems that none other than Tyron Woodley has emerged as a possible opponent for the returning Diaz brother. So far, despite confirming reports by our own Chris Taylor and Ariel Helwani, neither fighter has come right out and said something. That is, until now.

“If Nate [Diaz] wants to go UFC 219, I’m ready.” — Tyron Woodley told Brett Okamoto of ESPN.

There you have it, Woodley named names and both fighters are entering into their fight camp at the same time. As wild as it sounds, all fingers point to the match-up being the real deal. According to Brett Okamoto, the scrap would be for the UFC welterweight title. If Nate Diaz managed to win, no question the UFC would set up the trilogy fight for Conor McGregor for a chance he could earn three belts.

Tyron Woodley was waiting on the word to see how long his shoulder would keep him out. Meanwhile, practically every single welterweight was booked in fights. UFC 219 desperately needed a main event, especially as some fights fell off, so it looks like Woodley stepped up against Nate Diaz for them both to literally save the show. The last time Nate Diaz fought, he lost a close decision to McGregor at UFC 202 in the welterweight division. It drew the biggest pay-per-view buys in UFC history.

Default Early Odds Released for Tyron Woodley vs Nate Diaz

With UFC 219 being one of the more problematic cards of the year, the UFC had to do something major. The wild news of Tyron Woodley possibly fighting Nate Diaz at UFC 219 comes right on the heels of the younger Diaz brother entering into training camp. Who knows if the fight actually gets done, but it seems like it is working towards that way and as we all know, anything can happen in this fight game. The people over at Bovada have already released opening odds on the scrap.

Opening odds for a potential Tyron Woodley vs Nate Diaz bout (via Bovada):
Woodley -260
Diaz +200

If you’re looking for action, now is the time to put your money on Tyron Woodley because he’s a sizable favorite. It’s not that hard to tell why. Conor McGregor had to eat breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper and two desserts to make 168lbs for his welterweight bout with Nate Diaz and still managed to beat the career lightweight at UFC 202. Of all of Nate Diaz’s six ventures at welterweight, he’s won half of them. Tyron Woodley is a stout 170-pounder who will blow up even more after cutting to the limit and could give Diaz the same problems that Rory MacDonald did at UFC 129.

However, if you’re willing to go for the underdog bet, Nate Diaz presents problems for any fighter who dares to take him down. Not only that, while Woodley possesses demonstrable knockout power, Diaz is a rangy striker with excellent boxing known for an infinite gas tank. Even if you’re not the betting type, this style clash should be enough to get excited about the possible match-up. If you change your mind though, odds are good if the two fight in 2017 or in 2018.

Wow, that would be a big game changer if Diaz loses.
