American and indeed all Western foreign policy in the Middle East is premised on a lie:
"Islam is a religion of peace."
This is why, when the US government invaded Iraq, it tried to install a democracy in a country whose culture abhors the very idea. This is why the US didn't see the Shia-Sunni civil war coming. This is why the US supported the Arab Spring even as it installed Islamist governments across the region. This is why the US is supporting "moderate" rebels in Syria.
The West has the naive believe that Muslims don't actually mean what they say.

Wait, Syria is a Russian ally so we want to take out their leader and what, replace with a friendly leader?
The U.S. Is not FOR ISIS, we did not create them, they are a mix of Al Queda and Iraqi commanders. We do not work with ISIS in Syria, and do not help them. But did we funnel them to Syria to help destabilize it? Hell yeah...
We do fund anti Assad Syrian rebels though, who are stuck in the middle fighting both Assad and Isis.
This all really has very little to do with Syria though in the big picture, at least as far as were concerned. (our middle eastern partners have different reasons than us for wanting Assad gone, which I won't get into.)
It's more about us being an empire who wants to remain an empire, and Russia desperately trying to become one and us telling them, it won't happen. (if Russian gains foreign influence, money, power, resources, it means we lose it)
So what the U.S. Does in this situation is isolates them and sanction the fck out of them. Which we have done a phenomenal job at. Syria is really Russias only ally, and the only place outside the former soviet union which they have a military base. (russias military is extremely weak despite the bs you hear from morons on the Internet.)
But what we do now is to keep them that way for the next 20 years.
Syria is pretty much a no lose situation for us. Anytime the U.S. Military wanted to we could completely cripple ISIS. They are no threat to us. ISIS kills FAR more Muslims and Arabs than they will ever kill westerners. So basically, were just sitting back and letting them destabilize the middle east.
It's a sick world.
