  • Are most father trainers one trick ponies?

    A few examples

Kenny Porter, does he train anyone besides Shawn?

    What about Angel Garcia?

    Leo Santa Cruz dad?

    Loma's dad is another example.

    Any other examples?

They probably can't invest the same time and energy into other fighters like they do their sons, and maybe the sons themselves would get jealous.

An exception would be Enzo Calzaghe. Trained Joe, Cleverly, Reese, and Enzo Mac, along with others who I am not familiar with.

            it depends

Robert Garcia's father, Eduardo Garcia (Big G) founded a gym, trained his two sons, but also trained Fernando Vargas, Victor Ortiz and a few other notable fighters.

Floyd Sr, a boxing lifer likely, had his own run and started off training his own son from Pampers, but there's not much doubt in the fact that he trained other fighters.

Joel Diaz has his gym set up that he works at, and there's no doubt that he's brought his family members along under his wing (unsure if Joel Diaz Jr is just a name mix-up or Joel Diaz's actual son).

Angel Garcia got into boxing because of his son, Danny; with the gym now set as a beacon for folks in North Philly, when Danny Garcia is ready to hang them up, Angel Garcia could end up being the lead trainer out of DSG Boxing (working with other dads as they bring their own sons along), helping Philly-base fighters trying to make it like his son did.

Angel's not likely to live/die with every fighter like he did Danny, but he's got an experience to build forward on if he wants to stay with the sport.

Loma's dad was head coach for two very successful Olympic teams. He has barely started working full-time in the pro ranks and in America. He may turn out to be a top trainer.
