Maybe mentally ill people like Loughner would be more stable if they had a faith, or at least believed and had faith in a higher power.

Yeah, he would have been much more stable if, for example he believed 72 virgins would be waiting for him up in heaven if he carried out a particular act ...
Or,
If he accepted the bible as the word of God ... as long as he knew God doesn't really expect us to stone people to death for the crime of working on the sabbeth ...
His lack of faith had nothing to do with his motives behind the heinous act he committed; it was his mental instability and his deep hatred of the political system that did.
