Morals aside, from what I understand of 'street justice' what you suggested probably saved a lot of grief all the way around. If you had let the original scenario play out there might have been death or at the very least, real world, legal problems.
The downside to all this is that if this problem flares up again you could have a lot of explaining to do to the law. Whatever the case, you probably prevented (for the time being at least) grave consequences for both parties. Hope it all smooths over for you.
